Chemical Composition of the Essential Oil of Vernonia crotonoides

The genus Vernonia (family Asteraceae) comprises approximately 1000 species distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world, particularly in Africa and South America [1]. Several Vernonia species are widely used in native cultures as remedies for a variety of human ailments due to their therapeutic value. As a consequence of their ethnobotanical uses, several species have been investigated chemically [2]. So far the sesquiterpene lactones and flavonoids are the most characteristic compounds, which have been used as taxonomic markers [3]. Despite this extensive investigation, little is known about the essential oil composition of the genus Vernonia.

Vernonia crotonoides (DC.) Sch. Bip. is a synonym for Eremanthus crotonoides (DC.) Sch. Bip. [4].
