The genus Vernonia (family Asteraceae) comprises approximately 1000 species distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world, particularly in Africa and South America . Several Vernonia species are widely used in native cultures as remedies for a variety of human ailments due to their therapeutic value. As a consequence of their ethnobotanical uses, several species have been investigated chemically . So far the sesquiterpene lactones and flavonoids are the most characteristic compounds, which have been used as taxonomic markers . Despite this extensive investigation, little is known about the essential oil composition of the genus Vernonia.
