VI International Conference “Chemistry of Nitrogen-containing Heterocycles” (CNCH-2012)

Dear readers, we are pleased to offer a special issue of “Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds”, devoted to the VI international conference “Chemistry of Nitrogen-Containing Heterocycles” (CNCH-2012), which was held at Kharkov (Ukraine) on November 12–16, 2012. The organizers of the conference were: Institute of Organic Chemistry, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Kiev); Scientific-Technological Complex “Institute of Monocrystals”, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Kharkov); V. N. Karazin Kharkov National University; National University of Pharmacy (Kharkov) with general support from the company Enamine Ltd.

The conference was a continuation of a series of CNCH conferences established in the 1990s by Prof. V. D. Orlov. Its main difference from previous conferences was the attempt to introduce real international character with the invitation of leading specialists in the chemistry of heterocyclic compounds from the whole world. The geography of the participants was quite impressive: Kharkov was attended by scientists from Armenia, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, India, Italy, Latvia, Russia, Turkey, and the USA, submitting 14 plenary and 22 oral presentations. Presentations covering the most diverse aspects of the chemistry of nitrogen-containing heterocycles were presented by Prof. A. Basso and Prof. G. Cravotto (Italy), Prof. A. Dömling and Prof. R. Orru (Netherlands), Prof. P. Gros (France), Prof. T. Müller (Germany), Prof. V. Nenajdenko, Prof. L. Voskressensky, and A. Shutalev (Russia), Prof. O. Shishkin (Ukraine), Prof. R. Varma (USA), and other well-known scientists.

In addition, the conference included a specialized seminar on the use of advanced methods of chemical process activation (microwave irradiation, ultrasound) in the chemistry of heterocycles.

One outcome of the conference was the joint resolution of its organizing committee and the editorial board of “Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds” to publish a special issue containing papers by the conference participants, based on their conference papers. I sincerely hope that the papers will be of interest to the wide circle of readers of “Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds” and that this special issue will make its own contribution to the further growth of the popularity of the journal.
