Alpha recoil phenomena used for radiolabelling of surface layers of solids

Various techniques are reviewed which can be used to introduce a radioactive label by recoil into the surface layers of solid specimens. These include 1) impregnation with a solution containing the parent natural radionuclide, 2) vacuum injection from a thin deposit of the parent nuclide and 3) electrostatic collection of the precursor nuclide followed by recoil injection from the specimen surface. Depth distribution and possible uses of the injected label activity are discussed.
