Abstract

The role of similarity parameters for core and edge phenomena in tokamaks, and the possibility to use sets of matching discharges on different devices under identical dimensionless parameters are discussed. Such experiments, carried out so far have show that the Kadomtsev set of dimensionless parameters is well suited to describe global confinement, and also the L-to-H transition phenomenon, at least in the intermediate density regime. The comparison of the existing empirical data base for the observed density limit in tokamaks with the prediction of similarity laws suggest a role of finite-β effects in the explanation of this phenomenon. Finally we discuss the possibility to simulate the interference between confinement scaling laws and operating boundaries in similarity experiments.
