Internal stresses in superconductors

Abstract

The paper deals with internal stresses in the anisotropic Y2BaCuO5 (211)-YBa2Cu3O7 (123) particle-matrix system representing the melt-processed RE−Ba−Cu−O superconductor. The internal stresses originate during a cooling process due to different thermal expansion coefficients of the 123 matrix and the 211 particle. Obtained by the Griffit's crack formation condition, the 211 particle critical radius is derived as illustrated by the observed microcrack pattern.
