Questions related to improving standardization of the rough surfaces of products of the machine-building industry are considered. The use of the variable height parameter of the active ledges of a roughness and the variable depth parameter of the hollows of a roughness and their sign alternation is proposed. In addition to procedural support of State Standard GOST 2789–73, the use of a method of estimation of the standard deviation of the variable height parameter of roughness based on readings of ten measurements of active ledges is recommended.
