Abstract

The clinical experience that psychiatric disorders are more frequent in epileptic than in healthy children is supported by many heterogeneous studies. Altered behavior and various psychiatric symptoms are more common in epilepsies caused by brain malformation or brain damage and the extent is reflected by brain dysfunction. The importance of autistic symptoms in the context of temporal lobe epiepsies, West syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, and the atypical idiopathic focal epilepsies with continuous slow spike waves during sleep will be stressed. However, even children having epilepsies with benign course display behavioral disorders, even at the beginning of the disease. It is crucial to recognize psychiatric disorders in time and to begin appropriate therapy.
