We would like to thank all those who contributed to this special issue as well as the Editor in Chief of Regional Environmental Change and the reviewers for their help in the edition of the submitted papers. We also thank all colleagues and institutes from the Mediterranean Rim who participated to the SICMED programme and proved possible to build a genuine and stimulating interdisciplinary cooperation on a topic that is of interest for the whole Mediterranean region.
