Sustainable management of aggregate resources in Norway

Abstract

Norway has a significant aggregate industry and there is potential for further growth. However, there are usually competing land-use interests. Integrated land-use planning requires accessible and unbiased information on natural resources. The Geological Survey of Norway manages and maintains databases of Norwegian aggregates, sand, gravel and hard-rock deposits, with maps, qualitative and quantitative information. In the Jæren region on the southwestern coast, regional authorities are planning the future supply of aggregates. In a neighbouring region, a quarrying company is developing the Såt hard-rock deposit. These cases are used to underline the importance of geological information in the future development of existing quarries or when there are conflicting land-uses at the planning stage.

Résumé

La Norvège a une importante industrie des granulats et il existe un potentiel de croissance. Cependant, habituellement des intérêts différents dans l’utilisation de l’espace apparaissent. Une planification intégrée de l’aménagement du territoire exige donc une information disponible et impartiale quant aux ressources naturelles. La Commission géologique de Norvège gère et entretient des banques de données sur les ressources norvégiennes en granulats, sables, graviers et gisements de roches massives, produisant des informations cartographiques, qualitatives et quantitatives. Dans la région de Jaeren, sur la côte du sud-ouest, les autorités régionales planifient l’offre future en granulats. Dans une région voisine, une entreprise de carrière exploite le gisement de roche massive de Sat. Ces cas sont évoqués pour souligner l’importance d’une information géologique pour le développement futur de carrières existantes ou lorsqu’apparaissent des conflits potentiels dans l’aménagement du territoire au stade de la planification.
