Abstract

The paper examines the relationship between the sand (0.075–4.75 mm) and fines (<0.075 mm) on the achieved in situ compaction of natural and crushed materials used in the construction of the Egnatia Motorway in northern Greece. The study showed a clear distinction between the unprocessed samples and those produced by mechanical crushing. For the crushed materials, the results show an increase of in situ compaction with increased sand content and respective decrease of in situ compaction with increased fines content. The results can be used to aid the production of soil or aggregate mixtures which will meet specification requirements.
