Abstract
Thirteen professional cyclists were diagnosed and received operative treatment. All athletes reported pain in the thigh muscles when triggering maximum performance. Three patients showed an occlusion of the external iliac artery, and the other 10 were diagnosed with kinked arteries in the lower thigh. The kinking was detected via provocation angiography. Although the cause of the disease is yet unknown, we believe the reason is a dilatation of the artery in length and width due to an adaption of the artery’s tissue upon the athlete’s increased sport performance. The dilatation results in a loss of longitudinal elasticity, ultimately provoking kinking of the pelvic artery when the hip is flexed. The repetitive process of damage and the body’s attempt to repair the artery leads to an intimafibrosis, later producing occlusion of the artery.
