Quality of life in oncology – Principles and areas of application

Abstract

Cancer patients nowadays want information not only on the survival chances but also on the expected quality of life depending on the course of diagnosis and treatment modalities. Valid data on these aspects are needed for both treating physicians and patients to allow a comprehensive informed consent. To provide such data remains a challenge for quality of life research. A prerequisite to fulfil such a task is the implicitness of quality of life assessment in clinical research and the orientation towards international standards.
