Abstract

Alcohol becomes a problem if it is consumed to solve problems. Physicians are able to motivate their patients to seek for new solutions to their problems. If this does not work and if the alcohol drinking remains the same, we can aim for a reduction of alcohol consumption. The most frequent problems are difficulties related to sleep, anxiety, panic, compulsions, stress, burn out, mobbing, understructured daily routine, isolation, loss of work, few interests, personality disorders, abuse in childhood, physical injury in childhood (like meningitis). The exclusion of the simultaneous use of other drugs and the correct medication for a cut-down drinking procedure spares our patients physical withdrawal from alcohol. Slow cutting down and weaning are parts of this procedure. It takes time, patience and an ongoing reprocessing of motivation.
