Abstract
The cutting of electrical steel laminations has a significant influence on the operational characteristics of electrical machines. Due to material degradation in the vicinity of the stator and rotor edges, local hot spots can arise and the overall efficiency of the machine is decreased. Finite-element (FE) machine simulations are common tools for the design and evaluation of new electrical drive concepts. In scientific literature, several different models are used for the evaluation of cut-edge effects. However, these models have different drawbacks. In this work the previously established continuous local cut-edge model is presented and used. It enables the evaluation of different cutting and material parameters. Thereby, an optimization of the cutting process can be enabled. Modelling the magnetic material degradation and its implementation in the calculation tool chain is necessary to enable advanced machine simulations. In this context, a thorough understanding of the fundamental physical effects is required for the improvement of distinct material models. In this paper, the influence of different cutting processes and in case of punching, its respective cutting parameters on magnetic properties of electrical steel is studied and their impact on the operational characteristics of an electrical traction drive are analyzed. The interdependencies between mechanical processing as well as magnetic properties and their translation to continuous local material model are discussed in the context of the physical mechanisms. With this work, a contribution to the understanding of the impact of material processing on the characteristics of electrical machines is presented and the necessity for further advancement of degradation function is motivated.
