Abstract
Machine learning has been one of the upcoming technologies of the recent years and parallels the acceleration enabled by steadily more powerful CPU- and GPU architectures. It improves the performance of search on the internet, enables autonomous cars and enhances mankind’s interaction with electronical devices. Especially, artificial neural networks (=ANN) can conquer complex machine learning tasks but rely heavily on the data base neural networks are trained on. In tunnelling there is hardly any application of neural networks. This fact entails labour intensive, tedious and error-prone manual activities concerning e. g. as-built documentation and geotechnical measurement. Tunnelling constitutes a harsh environment for gathering the necessary representative data.
The contribution shows the necessity of constituting data sets which overcome insufficient quantity and nonrepresentative quality of training data and which are decisive prerequisites of successful application of machine learning. It shows its utilization for the assessment of serviceability of single-layer lining and emphasizes its role in crack detection in geotechnical tests. The data for setting up the data base needed for network training is gathered in Austrian TVM projects using 3D laser scanners and image acquisition systems during geotechnical testing.
