Abstract
By the end of 2017 the research project “XMercury”, which was carried out at the Wietersdorf plant of the company w&p Zement GmbH, was successfully finalized after five years of intensive research work. The project consortium—consisting of the companies ATEC Production und Services GmbH, Scheuch GmbH and w&p Zement GmbH—was able to design and implement a new system for the reduction of mercury emissions for the clinker production, which has been in operation since April 2015.
One of the reasons to initiate this project was the Minamata convention, which was launched by the UNEP in 2013 and places demands also upon the cement industry to contribute in reducing the worldwide mercury emissions. w&p Zement GmbH and its project partners saw the chance in this project to achieve the cutting edge in this technological field.
Due to the nature of the process, mercury and other highly volatile elements/compounds accumulate in the raw meal and particularly in the fine raw meal filter dust during cement clinker production. The “XMercury” project is focused on breaking these cycles and on the processing of the extracted filter dust to reduce the mercury emissions.
By operating with the installed system at the Wietersdorf cement plant the mercury emissions have been reduced by 80% over the past three years. The “XMercury” system is therefore an essential part of the ambitious goal of the Wietersdorf plant: to become one of the cleanest cement manufacturers in the world.
