A key task for the American Board of Radiology (ABR) is the creation and administration of examinations to assess knowledge, skill, and understanding essential to the general practice of radiology, radiation oncology, and medical physics. In addition, the ABR oversees and conducts subspecialty examinations in neuroradiology, vascular/interventional radiology, and pediatric radiology. The ABR relies on the efforts of many individuals to accomplish this mission, including members of The Society for Pediatric Radiology (SPR).

The written examination in diagnostic radiology for the residents is focused on basic knowledge and includes an equal number of questions from the each of the diagnostic categories, one of which is Pediatric Radiology. Questions dealing with pediatric radiology are generated by an item-writing committee composed of several SPR members, each serving a 3-year term.
