Abstract
Wood chips, mainly Sitka spruce (SS), were allowed to stand on a log yard for nearly 4 months. Samples of chips were taken at regular intervals during this period and their acidity and buffer capacity measured. The acidity of the wood was deter-mined by a method developed by Subramanian et al. (1983). This method is based on the reaction of wood acids with an aqueous solution of sodium acetate to liberate an equivalent amount of acetic acid. The amount of liberated acetic acid is measured by titration. This value is termed the ‘total acid con-tent’, as both bound and water soluble acids are extracted by the acetate solution. The buffer capacity of the wood chips was monitored using this method and it was found to change sys-temetically with storage. Changes in chip acidity may influence the curing process of urea formaldehyde (UF) resins. Therefore the age of the wood chips might be an important variable in chipboard and medium density fibreboard (MDF) production.
