Abstract
Rotary cutter head wood planing, where the angle between the axis of the cutter head and the direction of feed speed is 90°, is a well known woodworking operation, which is quite extensively used in connection with plane surfaces. Theoretical characteristics of the obtained surface and the geometry of the resulting chips are defined by the movement of a point at the tip of the cutting tool. The curve traced out in a plane which is perpendicular to the axis of the working cutter head by the said point is a trochoid. In technical literature, this movement has been studied considerably and is well known to professional community.
If, however, the axis of the working cutter head is inclined by a certain angle with respect to the direction of feed speed, the point at the tip of the cutting tool will move in space. The article studies such movement of the point at the tip of the cutting tool and examines the effect that such movement has on the quality of the resulting surface and on chip geometry.
In the caše of planing with inclined cutter head, kinematics of a point at the tip of the cutting tool in space is defined by a time dependent local vector of this point. This gives an exact description of the trajectory of the said point. Although the curve traced out by the movement of the point at the tip of the cutting tool is without any point of intersection, theoretical surface resulting from milling and chip geometry can be determined by studying this curve.
The geometry of the milling operation is defined by a projection of an osculatory circle at a characteristic point on the plane lying perpendicular to the worked surface and in feed speed direction. The position and the two main axes of the ellipse are defined, and this defines, precisely enough, the geometry of the milling operation in this plane.
Also determined is the characteristic plane, where chip geometry can be defined by means of the curve of a trochoid, by taking into consideration the feed speed component in this plane. The problem of defining the geometry of the milling operation, then, has been reduced to the known planar case of standard planing operations.
The effect of the angle of inclination of the cutter head on milling geometry is shown graphically in annexed diagrams. From the results presented it is evident that inclined cutter head planing may be of potential use in improving the quality of the resulting surface.
