Abstract

The anatomical and chemical properties of Dendrocalamus brandisii sheaths at different growth stages were investigated. Undifferentiated and differentiated vascular bundles were observed. More fibers were observed to be closer to phloem than to protoxylem. D. brandisii sheaths contained short and medium-sized fibers, and the slenderness ratio showed the suitability of the raw material for papermaking. Low ash but high lignin and comparable holocellulose contents in D. brandisii sheaths showed promising potential of the raw material for paper making.
