Acetals-induced strength increases and lower resin content in MUF and PE wood adhesives

Abstract

Acetals such as methylal and ethylal are shown to be particularely effective additives in improving strenth of wood boards bonded with melamine-urea-formaldehyde a(MUF) resins and they show some appreciable effect on other resins, too, particularely PF resins. The thermomechanical analysis and laboratory particleboard results reported show that acetals allow a considerable decrease in resin loading, and thus for MUFs also in melamine content, on the bonded wood panel and this at parity of performance.

Zusammenfassung

Acetale wie Methylal und Ethylal erwiesen sich als besonders effektive Kleberzusätze. Sie erhöhen die Festigkeit von Platten, die mit MUF-Harzen gebunden sind. Sie zeigen auch bei anderen Harzen einen wünschenswerten Effekt, vor allem bei PF-Harzen. Thermomechanische Analysen und Ergebnisse der Herstellung von Laborplatten werden vorgestellt. Sie zeigen, daß Acetale eine erhebliche Verringerung der Harzanteile in den gebundenen Platten ermöglichen, und daß für MUF-Harze auch der Melamin-Anteil gesenkt werden kann, und dies bei gleichbleibender Festigkeitsqualität.
