Abstract
The idea of adding “intelligence” to orthopedic implants with the aim of optimizing fracture healing by automatic modification of shape and elasticity of the implant is pursued. To achieve this, it is necessary to incorporate both control and measurement capabilities. An external fixator based on a hexapod mechanism was developed, which allowed precisely computed bone movements to be carried out. In particular, slow and careful fracture reduction was possible without pain to the patient. A prototype with motors was investigated. The application of force sensors made it possible to monitor the course of fracture healing with the hexapod. The authors are of the opinion that reduction robots and “intelligent” fixators will be routinely used by orthopedic trauma surgeons in the future.
