Abstract

In this research, light-weight magnesium stabilized zirconia (MgSZ) refractories were prepared by a casting process using polystyrene spheres (PS) and sawdust as pore former materials and polyvinyl alcohol solution as binder. The effects of the addition and size of the polystyrene spheres on the properties of light-weight refractories were studied. With the total addition of 12 mass-% content of PS, with a size ratio of (1–1.5 mm):(0.2–0.5 mm) = 3:7, the bulk density and compressive strength of the light-weight porous MgSZ refractory samples were 0.79 g/cm3 and 2.6 MPa, which are suitable for the requirements of industrial applications.
