Abstract
To obtain spiny mice (Acomys cahirinus) for study, one male sired litters with two females in the same enclosure. During postpartum estrus, a second litter was obtained, permitting a comparison of the offspring of the same sire and different females with the offspring of the same sire and female. Eighteen spiny mice were presented with familiar and unfamiliar conspecifics of various kinship. Latency of approach and time spent with the presented animal were recorded. Generally, most of the differences in the responses were not significant. However, there was a tendency for responses to be quicker to unfamiliar/unrelated conspecifics.
