Abstract
Mobile IT-systems are used frequently in our mobile society. This involves so-called smart devices like smartphones, smart glasses or tablet-PCs. They are used for both: private and occupational activities. Until now there is little in-depth knowledge available about the effects of such devices on the musculoskeletal system of humans.
This study investigates effects of the use of tablet computers on muscles of the upper extremity. Muscular activities are examined while holding and operating a tablet computer while walking. In addition the tablet-PC’s center of mass was varied as independent variable. Changes in musclular activation and fatigue were expected because of the different location of the tablet computer’s center of mass. Significant differences in the activation levels of M. biceps brachii, M. flexor carpi radialis, M. flexor carpi ulnaris and M. extensor carpi radialis were observed. The results show how flexor muscles of elbow and wrist as well as supinator muscles of the forearm can be relieved by shift ing the center of mass of the tablet computer towards the hand and the elbow of the gripping hand. Future studies are proposed to explore effects of muscular fatigue using a more static experimental task. Practical Relevance Regarding the use of mobile devices like tablet PCs in daily work, the physical load of the user should be considered in addition to cognitive workload. This study shows how physical workload of the users can be reduced by slight technical modifications of hardware design.
