Abstract
The Internet of Things promises vast business opportunities by exploiting latest technologies and enabling hybrid solutions of physical products and digital services. However, technological innovations do not necessarily lead to economic success. Hence, companies are hesitant and unsure how IoT technology can be leveraged to generate economic success. We try to address this challenge by reflecting the development of business models in the context of IoT and by providing guidance on how to develop IoT business models. Based on an analysis of the role of IT in business models, we develop specific business model components and business model patterns for the IoT. In addition, we point out key challenges faced in implementing such business models and discuss corresponding solutions.
