The exact pathomechanisms of effector cell activation resulting in annoying symptoms of chronic urticaria are far from being clear. The role of infections is discussed for many years but has not been proven. In our hands persistent bacterial infections, particularly with streptococci and Helicobacter pylori, play a major role. Therefore, the current knowledge of the pathogenic role of infections in chronic urticaria and their potential association to autoimmune mechanisms will be presented.
