Abstract

The antagonistic rhizobacterium, Pseudomonas fluorescens strain LRB3W1, controls cabbage Fusarium yellows caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans and inhibits its growth in vitro. Conversely, Serratia marcescens strain B2, known as a biocontrol bacterium, did not inhibit growth of F. oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans and the suppressive effect of strain B2 against cabbage yellows was less than that of strain LRB3W1. However, combined inoculation of strain LRB3W1 with strain B2 was more effective than treatment with strain LRB3W1 alone. Colonization of each bacterium in the cabbage rhizosphere was not influenced by the presence of the other bacterium. When bud-cells of the pathogen were treated with 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol from strain LRB3W1 and fungal cell wall degrading enzyme from strain B2 simultaneously, an additive inhibitory effect was observed. According to the results the fungal cell wall degrading enzyme-producing bacterium enhanced the biocontrol effect of the antibiotic-producing bacterium against cabbage Fusarium yellows.
