Abstract
The effects of ethanolic extracts (20 % per fresh weight (Fw) or 6 % per dry weight) of 20 different plant species were tested against late blight (Phytophthora infestans) severity on detached tomato leaves. Most effective extracts were from leaf material of Hedera helix and Paeonia suffruticosa. Preinfectional treatments (2–14 days before inoculation (dbi)) suppressed disease development almost completely. The activity decreased gradually when lower concentrations of extracts were applied. Both extracts also exhibited a high degree of activity against late blight on entire tomato plants.
Preinfectional treatments (2 dbi) of H. helix and P. sufruticosa-extracts (20 and 10 % FW) proved to be highly active in inhibiting downy mildew (Pseudoperonospora cubensis) development of cucumber. The effectiveness declined when lower extract concentrations were applied. The disease-reducing activity of both extracts was confined to the site of applications within the leaf area and the extracts induced no systemic resistance in higher inserted leaves. Both extracts exhibited curative effects when applied 1–4 days after inoculation; sporangia development of P. cubensis was drastically reduced.
In vitro studies showed that P. suffruticosa-extracts effectively retarded mycelium growth of P. infestans, while H. helix extracts were not active. On the other hand, both extracts markedly inhibited release of zoospores from sporangia of P. infestans and P. cubensis and germination of zoospores. Thin-layer chromatography and bioautography methods using Cladosporium cucumerinum as test organism revealed three antifungal zones in extracts of H. helix. The P. suffruticosa extract exhibited one inhibitory zone to P. infestans.
