There are significant growth opportunities for generics in the European market, according to a new analysis from Frost & Sullivan. The combination of aging populations, expensive brandname products pushing up healthcare costs and patent expiries for blockbusters is driving this growth. With European governments under pressure to reduce healthcare spending, generics are widely regarded as the best method for ensuring access to safe, effective, high-quality medicines at affordable prices for the majority of patients. Several governments are actively promoting generic substitution and reference pricing. The analysis indicates that revenues in the European generics market totalled $17.18 billion in 2006 and are expected to increase to $35.90 billion by 2013.
