Abstract
G etting physicians to change their prescribing habits is not an easy task. But a US pharmacy benefit management company, Caremark Inc., has had some success with their physician ranking scheme in Chicago, Illinois. By showing physicians how they rate against their peers in terms of prescribing behaviour, the ‘Physician Profiling Alliance’ programme has resulted in fewer prescriptions for antidepressants and antibacterials, and consequently lower drug expenditure. The findings during the first 12 months’ experience with the programme were presented at the 18th National Conference of the Employers’ Managed Health Care Association (MHCA) [ Washington, DC, US; November 1997 ]. *
