Abstract

T he use of aggressive therapy to establish prompt control at the onset of asthma is one of the key recommendations of the latest guidelines from the US National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP). The report, based on a comprehensive review of scientific evidence accumulated during the past 6 years, updates the first US asthma clinical practice guidelines that were released in 1991. The first presentation of the new guidelines took place at the Joint Meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the Clinical Immunology Society and the American Academy of Immunologists [ San Francisco, US; February 1997 ].
