Design Challenges in Underbonnet Thermal Management

Abstract

Surface temperatures of up to 900 degrees and high thermal energy dissipation levels from the engine mean the underbonnet thermal environment is an extremely hostile one. Add to this the powerful influences on the underbonnet layout due to styling, crashworthiness, pedestrian safety and NVH, for example, and the thermal management challenges facing designers becomes apparent.
