The Darmstadt effect: A new type of nuclear spectroscopy?

  • Published:
Il Nuovo Cimento A (1971-1996)

Summary

We analyze the well-known and hitherto unsolved problem of the Darmstadt effect, through the idea that the observed sharp e1e2-lines reflect the interaction of the “coherent photon clouds” that are dragged along by the colliding heavy ions, and have their origin in the interaction of the zero-point fluctuations of the quantized e.m. field with the different collective states of the nuclei. We find such idea adequate to describe the experimental observations which in the future could give access to a new kind of nuclear spectroscopy.
