Experiments are described from which it could be derived that for each series of homologous straight-chain organic compounds investigated the logarithm of the coefficient of distribution between a given solvent pair at infinite dilution is a linear function of the number of C-atoms present in the alkyl group. Consequently this relation can be represented by the formula10log K0 = A − Bn, whereA andB are constants, andn equals the number of C-atoms in the alkyl group. Moreover, for a given solvent pair, the same value ofB has been found for each homologous series. Therefore,B may be taken as a measure of the light-heavy selectivity of the solvent pair concerned.
