Summary
To investigate the influence of car exhaust fumes or cigarette smoke on human tears, these gases were incubated with human tears. Within a short time the proteins of the tear fluid were degraded. This reaction was documented by polyacrylamidegel-electrophoresis. Especially tear specific prealbumins, which are responsible for the bacteriostatic activity of tears, were destroyed by the pollution containing gases. By the destruction of tear proteins by car exhaust fumes or cigarette smoke the interaction of tear components can be abolished and a connection between the increasing incidence of the dry eye syndrome seems to be possible.
