Samenvatting

‘Screening op prostaatkanker vermindert de sterfte aan die ziekte met ruim een kwart. Dat blijkt uit een groot Europees onderzoek onder leiding van een Nederlander’, aldus de opening van een van de hoofdpunten van het NOS-Journaal van 18 maart 2009. Even later komt onderzoeksleider Fritz Schröder van het ERSPC (European Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer) aan het woord: ‘We zijn erg blij dat we voor het eerst hebben kunnen aantonen dat een eenvoudige bloedtest kan leiden tot een daling van de sterfte aan prostaatkanker.’1 Blij?
