Summary
Religion and coping in mental healthcare
In this paper, we will try to substantiate a basic assumption: the necessity to pay attention to faith and worldviews in mental healthcare. We will do so by referring to the results of research in the area of religious coping, carried out in the United States. After this, we will briefly indicate the findings of our own research in this area in The Netherlands. Our research was focussed on the position, according to clients, of faith and worldview in dealing with mental health problems. Furthermore, we studied the position that therapists assign to this dimension in the treatment process. We end with some conclusions about the research results’ significance for mental healthcare.
