Adjusting to cancer: the role of spirituality

Spirituality can play an important role in adjusting to a life-threatening disease such as cancer. In this review, research in this area is summarized. Spirituality has been demonstrated to be positively associated with quality of life, coping, and hope. Negative correlations have been found with anxiety, depression, end-of-life despair, and physical symptoms. However, interpretation of these results is somewhat complicated by the conceptual vagueness of the concept of spirituality, its confusing relationship with religiosity, and the limitations of the – mainly American - instruments used. The development of a Dutch spirituality questionnaire and its use among cancer patients is needed to further clarify the role spirituality plays in adjusting to this disease in Dutch society.
