Huisarts Wet 2003;46(13):… Het vermijdingsmodel is een verklaringsmodel voor het ontstaan en verergeren van functionele beperkingen bij patiënten met een aandoening van het bewegingsapparaat. Ervaren pijn tijdens activiteit leidt tot angst voor nieuwe pijn bij nieuwe activiteit en zo tot vermijdingsgedrag. Op de lange termijn betekent deze fysieke inactiviteit dat de fysieke conditie, en daarmee de belastbaarheid van het lichaam, afneemt. Dit leidt tot functionele beperkingen. Doordat deze beperkingen in het functioneren verder vermijdingsgedrag in de hand werken, ontstaat een vicieuze cirkel, met een toename van beperkingen als resultaat. In de behandeling dient daarom het verbreken van de associatie tussen lichamelijke activiteit en pijn en het verbeteren van de fysieke belastbaarheid voorop te staan.
