Zoals bekend speelt Streptococcus mutans een belangrijke rol bij het ontstaan van cariës. Om het cariësrisico bij patiënten te kunnen beoordelen, is het nuttig het gehalte van deze bacterie in het speeksel te meten. Samen met andere klinische gegevens kan aldus worden ingeschat hoe groot de kans op het ontstaan van cariës bij een patiënt is.
