Samenvatting
Mannen en vrouwen verschillen, niet alleen in uiterlijk, maar ook in gedrag. Onderzoek met diermodellen heeft aangetoond dat geslachtsverschillen in gedrag ontstaan onder invloed van geslachtshormonen tijdens een kritieke periode in de foetale ontwikkeling waarin de hersenen het meest gevoelig zijn voor hormonale invloeden. De hersenen ontwikkelen zich in mannelijke richting door een directe werking van het testosteron bij een mannetje en in vrouwelijke richting in de afwezigheid van dit hormoon bij een vrouwtje. Onder invloed van testosteron ontstaan er vooral geslachtsverschillen in de hypothalamus, een hersengebied dat uitermate belangrijk is voor de expressie van seksueel gedrag, maar ook in het olfactorische systeem, dat een belangrijke rol speelt bij partnerkeuze. Bij de mens zijn er ook duidelijke aanwijzingen dat testosteron een mannelijke genderidentiteit induceert, en dat er verschillen zijn in hersenstructuren en functies die samenhangen met seksuele oriëntatie en genderidentiteit.
