Acute intoxicaties: maak gebruik van de aanwezige hulp

Het Nationaal Vergiftigingen Informatie Centrum én de eigen ziekenhuisapotheker

Samenvatting

Intoxicaties komen bij kinderen vaak voor. Ernstige intoxicaties zijn echter zeldzaam. Snelle herkenning van een ernstige intoxicatie kan daardoor moeilijk zijn. Het Nationaal Vergiftigingen Informatie Centrum en de eigen ziekenhuisapotheker hebben waardevolle specifieke expertise op dit gebied. De behandelend kinderarts dient laagdrempelig een beroep te doen op deze toxicologische expertise, om zodoende ernstige morbiditeit en mortaliteit te voorkómen. Behandelingen van intoxicaties, gericht op verminderen van absorptie of versnellen van eliminatie van de ingenomen stof, zijn grotendeels verlaten. Het klinisch beeld is bepalend voor het (ondersteunend) therapeutisch handelen.

Summary

Although intoxications occur frequently in children, serious intoxications are rare. Swift identification of serious intoxications may therefore be difficult. The national center for information and advice on intoxications (‘Nationaal Vergiftigingen Informatie Centrum’) and the hospital pharmacist have specific and valuable expertise, which the attending pediatrician should use without hesitation, so as to prevent serious morbidity and mortality. Therapeutic strategies aiming to inhibit intestinal resorption or enhance elimination of the ingested substance, have largely been abandoned. The clinical picture now determines what (supportive) measures should be taken.
