Samenvatting

Multiple sclerose (MS) is een inflammatoire demyelinisatieziekte van het centrale zenuwstelsel. De ziekte wordt in gang gezet door een niet-specifieke activering van het immuunsysteem na een virale of bacteriële infectie, die leidt tot een auto-immuunreactie gericht tegen het eigen myeline-eiwit. Voor migratie van leukocyten naar het centrale zenuwstelsel is een interactie nodig tussen adhesiemoleculen op de leukocyten en liganden op het doelorgaan.
