Summary
Objective. To assess knowledge and fear of side-effects of inhaled medication in parents of children with asthma.
Design. Descriptive study.
Method. 176 parents of children with asthma who used maintenance medication completed out a questionnaire on their knowledge of mode of action and side-effects of inhaled medication. They were also asked to answer a number of statements about asthma and inhaled medication.
Results. All parents reported that they had received information about the mode of action of inhaled medication at the time of prescription. One out of four parents did not adequately report the mode of action of bronchodilators, and 40.9% of parents were unaware of the fact that inhaled corticosteroids (ics) are anti-inflammatory drugs able to prevent symptoms of asthma. Knowledge of the mode of action of bronchodilators and ics was not associated with the duration of medication use (odds ratio 0.97 (p = 0.53), and 1.0 (p = 0.97), respectively). 25.7% of the parents were afraid of possible side-effects of inhaled medication. Parents who had not received information about possible side-effects had this fear significantly more often (35.2%) than parents who had been informed (21.3%; p = 0.02, chi-squared test). 25.6% of the parents felt that medication has virtually no value in the prevention of symptoms of asthma and 29.0% felt that an antibiotic is needed when symptoms of asthma increase.
Conclusions. Many parents of children with asthma have insufficient knowledge of the mode of action of inhaled medication, and fear possible side-effects of inhaled medication.
Samenvatting
Doel.
