Vaders en adolescenten: hoe communiceren ze met elkaar?

In een onderzoek bij 484 gezinnen is gekeken naar de relatie tussen vaders en adolescenten. Voor een aantal communicatieaspecten (communicatiestijl, gevoelens die de communicatie met vaders oproept bij de adolescent, de onderwerpen waar met vader over wordt gepraat, en de relatieaspecten affectieve band met de vader en protectie van de adolescent door de vader) is gekeken of er verschillen waren tussen moeders en vaders. Vaders blijken in het algemeen minder positief met hun adolescenten te communiceren dan moeders, maar ze blijken niet anders te zijn wat betreft negatieve aspecten van communicatie. Het algemene beeld is dat vaders op constructieve wijze met hun zonen of dochters omgaan.

Hoewel kinderen zich in de adolescentieperiode meer gaan richten op de wereld buiten het gezin, blijft de band met de ouders belangrijk voor de meeste adolescenten (Brown, Mounts, Lamborn & Steinberg, 1993). De relatie tussen ouder en kind verandert gedurende de adolescentieperiode van een relatie gebaseerd op unilaterale autoriteit en regulering naar een relatie die meer gebaseerd is op gelijkwaardigheid (Youniss & Smollar, 1985; Almeida & Galambos, 1993). Voor vaders, moeders en hun zonen en dochters is dit een periode van verandering en ontwikkeling.
