Samenvatting
Een speciale uitgave van dit tijdschrift wijden aan stoornissen die ‘aan autisme verwant’ zijn, zal menigeen nogal vreemd voorkomen. De aanleidingen om dit te doen zijn toch velerlei. Het gaat om een groep individuen waarvan de problematiek nog maar vaag omschreven is, maar die kwantitatief waarschijnlijk beduidend groter is dan de groep ‘echte autisten’. Bovendien lijkt er in Nederland sprake van een kleine diagnostische inflatie, die om bezinning vraagt. Gaat het om een klinische vergaarbak of om een zinvolle categorale ordening? De ‘aan autisme verwante stoornissen’ plaatsen beleidmakers voor belangrijke dilemma's: moet de specifieke zorgverlening, zoals gedefinieerd in de Nota Autisme (Tweede Kamer, 1984), destijds toegemeten en toegespitst op de ‘echte’ autisten, verbreed worden met de groep aan autisme verwante stoornissen? Naast belangenverenigingen (de oudervereniging NVA: Nederlandse Vereniging voor Autisme en verwante contactstoornissen) worden de mensen van de praktijk (kinderpsychiaters, psychologen, orthopedagogen en onderwijzenden) en wetenschappers door deze vragen uitgedaagd.

Summary
This special edition of Kind en Adolescent is devoted to autism related disorders. In the introductory article the fate of disorders previously described under idiosyncratic labels (a–typical development, symbiotic psychosis, borderline syndrome of childhood, schizoid personality disorder of childhood, multiplex developmental disorder) and now to be classified as pervasive developmental disorders not otherwise specified (PDD–NOS) is discussed. The authors criticise the point of view that PDD–NOS is, nowadays in the Netherlands, considered too much as a clinical entity. They stress that research should pursue further exploration of non–specific areas in psychopathology.
