Samenvatting
Dit artikel gaat over diagnostiek en behandeling bij volwassenen met een pervasieve ontwikkelingsstoornis. De diagnostiek van deze stoornissen komt aan bod voorzover die bij volwassenen anders is dan bij kinderen. Ook bespreken we kort de afbakening met andere psychische stoornissen die bij volwassenen voorkomen. Vervolgens beschrijven we twee behandelingen. Daaruit blijkt dat gangbare technieken en interventies uit de directieve en gedragstherapie bij deze patiënten bruikbaar zijn, maar dat vaak enige aanpassingen nodig zijn. Deze bestaan er vooral uit dat belangrijke personen in de omgeving van de patiënt meer dan gebruikelijk bij de behandeling moeten worden betrokken, en dat de therapeut moet kiezen voor eenvoudige behandelingstechnieken die de patiënt houvast geven.

Abstract
This article addresses the assessment and treatment of pervasive developmental disorders in adults. The assessment of these disorders is discussed in so far as it differs in adults from that in children. The distinction between these and other mental disorders is also briefly discussed. We describe two case examples. It is argued that many of the clinical techniques and interventions currently applied in behavioral and directive therapy are useful with these patients, but that they often require some adaptation. Importantly, significant persons in the patient's social environment need to be more closely involved in the treatment program than is usually the case. Furthermore, it is argued that the therapist should select simple treatment techniques that the patient himself finds supportive.
