Over de behandeling van functionele geheugenklachten bij psychische problemen

Samenvatting

Functionele geheugenklachten komen veel voor bij cliënten met psychische problematiek. Doorgaans behoeven deze klachten geen uitgebreide aandacht en nemen ze in het verloop van de behandeling af naarmate de verschijnselen, behorend tot het betreffende klachtenbeeld, verminderen. In sommige gevallen echter kan vergeetachtigheid leiden tot angst voor dementie en de gevolgen daarvan, die een welhaast obsessioneel karakter kan krijgen en interfereert met de ingezette behandeling. In dergelijke gevallen is het zinvol de focus van de behandeling tijdelijk te verleggen naar de geheugenklachten. In dit artikel wordt een kortdurend behandelmodel beschreven, bestaande uit een uitgebreide anamnese van de klachten, neuropsychologisch onderzoek en uitleg over het ontstaan en de instandhouding van geheugenklachten.

Abstract

Functional memory complaints are frequently reported by patients suffering from psychopathological disorders. Usually these complaints do not need special attention. They decrease in the course of the therapy along with the other symptoms. In some cases the forgetfulness leads to an almost obsessional fear for dementia, that interferes with the regular treatment. In such cases it is useful to temporarily shift the focus of therapy to the memory complaints. In this article a short-term treatment model is described, existing of an extensive anamnesis, a neuropsychological assessment and an explanation of the origin and the maintenance of memory complaints.
