Local lesion formation inCyamopsis tetragonaloba taub. with DEMV and other plant viruses

A general similarity was seen in the structure of lesion and time of lesion formation by DEMV and SSMV inC. tetragonaloba. In addition to minute lesions visible one day after inoculation, a number of single cell-, few cell- and multiplecell-lesions formed on the inoculated leaves. Browning along the perimeter of the lesion and formation of thickened rings within, were the main features of the lesions. Browning occurred along the cell-walls of the infected cells where they were flanked by non-infected cells and seldom between infected cells within a lesion. The rings when continuous through an infected and non-infected cell showed thickening in the arcs lying in the infected cell while the other part remained hyaline. No change in lesion size was observed from the time infected cells could be recognized (6–8 hr.) to 6 days; no progressive degenerative changes were seen in the neighbouring cells with time. Presumably only cells that were directly infected during inoculation developed into lesions in these host-virus systems. With AcMV, browning of peripheral deposit was neither intense nor rapid. Single cell- and few cell-lesions only developed with CLLV and BLLV.

Viral inclusion bodies occurred from 4 to 12 hr. after inoculation in inoculated epidermal cells of leaves of systemic hosts of DEMV and SSMV, as well as in the local lesion host with SSMV, AcMV and CLLV.
